Couples often tell us they want a wedding that feels unhurried, personal and genuinely enjoyable – not just for them, but for everyone they invite. That’s exactly why weddings at Howqua Lodge, Mansfield are designed as a full weekend experience, not a few rushed hours.

Here’s an honest look at how a typical wedding weekend unfolds at Howqua Lodge, so you know exactly what to expect.

Friday: settling in, setting up, and slowing down

Most wedding groups arrive on Friday afternoon. There’s no formal schedule – this is about settling in and setting up in preparation for your celebration.

Long timber trestle tables with orange cloths and wildflower vases, set for dining in The Barn. Warm, rustic setting.

Guests (usually the bridal party and/or close family) arrive, unpack, choose rooms, wander the grounds, and start to relax. The Barn setup is easy, with many helping hands to place furniture and decorate the space. The coolroom is available for hire for you to load on Friday and keep your drinks cold all weekend.

By Friday night, the atmosphere is calm and familiar. Much of the setup is complete, which makes Saturday feel effortless. Some couples organise a casual BBQ dinner or use the pizza oven, others head to one of the local pubs/breweries in Mansfield or Jamieson.

Saturday morning: calm, space, and preparation

Saturday morning is quiet and unhurried.

At this stage, only the bridal party and close family are on site. This gives couples the space they need for hair and makeup, final preparations and a slow start to the day without an audience.

Some people head down to the river or take a walk, others enjoy a relaxed breakfast or simply sit and take in the valley views. There’s no travel stress, no rushing between locations, and no juggling logistics.

Couples consistently tell us this calm, private window before the ceremony is one of the most valuable parts of the weekend.

The ceremony: choice, flexibility and stunning scenery

Ceremonies at Howqua Lodge usually take place in one of three locations:

  • The Lawn, with panoramic valley views

  • Beside the Howqua River

  • In the Bush Gully, surrounded by trees

Each location offers a very different feel, and couples choose what suits them best. We also have wet-weather options, so there’s always a solid Plan B.

The reception: simple, relaxed and well-organised

After the ceremony, guests move to The Barn for the reception. The space is intentionally simple, allowing couples to style it in a way that feels true to them.

Dinner, speeches and dancing follow at a comfortable pace under the twinkling fairy and festoon lights.

On cooler evenings, the firepits outside become a natural gathering place. Guests drift between the dance floor and the warmth of the fire, chatting, laughing and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. It’s often where some of the best conversations of the night happen.

To keep everyone safe, guest transport is by bus – it works smoothly every time. Noise restrictions are respected, and the evening winds down naturally rather than being abruptly cut off.

Sunday: breakfast, packing up, and farewells

Sunday morning is one of the most-loved parts of the weekend.

Guests in The Stables wake up on site, share breakfast, and swap stories from the night before. They slowly pack up, with no checkout rush, no long drive home immediately after the celebration, and no sense of being pushed out the door.

Goodbyes are unhurried and genuine.

Why we host weddings at Howqua Lodge Mansfield this way

Howqua Lodge is our private home, and we host a limited number of weddings each year. That’s deliberate.

A wedding weekend here isn’t about squeezing as much as possible into a short timeframe. It’s about giving couples and their guests the space to connect, celebrate and truly enjoy the experience.

If you’re looking for a loud, late-night party venue or a quick in-and-out wedding, we may not be the right fit – and that’s okay. But if you value time together, beautiful surroundings and a relaxed, well-run celebration, a wedding weekend at Howqua Lodge might be exactly what you’re looking for.

If you’d like more detail about accommodation, guest numbers or how the weekend can be tailored, we’re always happy to talk it through.
